The first few bits of information have trickled out on the next Gears of War game. According to Game Informer, this new title will be a spinoff and is being developed by Bulletstorm developer People Can Fly. It will be in third-person like the main games, and it will be a prequel staring Cole and Baird, along with two new characters, Garron and Sofia.
Part of Kilo Squad, the story involves the four being tried for treason because “they didn’t follow orders, stole equipment, and their actions could end up killing millions of people they swore to protect,” said an anonymous source to IGN. The game is set to take place over a decade before the first game, which would explain the more youthful versions of Cole and Baird on display. I’m sure a young Marcus and Dom will make cameos in the game as well.
Other details relate to the multiplayer. Apparently the game will have a new “smart-spawn” system that will help extend the life of multiplayer. There will also be a new mode called “Overrun” which is a combination of Horde and Beast modes. That sounds really fun and is the next logical thing to do after Beast mode was introduced in Gears of War 3. It it ends up being half as fun as Left 4 Dead’s Versus mode, then I’m in.
More information will be revealed at Microsoft’s press conference next Monday, so stay tuned.
