The free-to-play multiplayer RPG Phantasy Star Online 2 was just hacked recently, but it appears that it was just to casually prank players. However, it still doesn’t bode well for the game’s future. The hacker(s) in question moved important NPCs in the game to places where players could not reach them (such as high up in the air or behind glass panes).

Sega announced that it was well aware of the problem and was investigating. The company also recommends that when a player sees something that looks like hacking, that they should change to a different area and report anybody that they may have seen performing the hack.

Sega has had a bit of a history of fostering hackers and cheaters in their past Phantasy Star Online games, so if hackers are already so easily doing things like this in PSO2 before the game has even released, then the future of this game doesn’t look too bright.  Especially for a lot of people that would prefer to play the game without hackers and cheaters compromising the experience.
