Final Fantasy Versus XIII has now been in development for over six years, pretty much an entire console generation. Details about it have always been slim, with only a few screenshots or a new trailer every once in a while to keep fans interested. Inside sources are now reporting, though, that the game has finally been put to rest for good.
Kotaku has received information from various sources, and they’re all saying the same thing: Final Fantasy Versus XIII, in its original form, has been cancelled by Square Enix. One source mentions that the game was officially cancelled only a few weeks ago, and that the decision greatly affected the morale of the studio and saddened many staff members.
The source goes on to state that Square has decided to not publicly announce the game’s cancellation, instead letting it fade into obscurity. Almost like what happened to Duke Nukem Forever before it finally came out. The source says that this decision was made, because Square fears that announcing the bad news will impact the company’s stock prices, among other things. Fans would also probably be very upset.
The game has been notably absent from major gaming events, with nothing shown at last year’s Tokyo Game Show or this year’s E3. Tetsuya Nomura has also dodged questions when asked about the status of the game. He told Famitsu in March that “We’re almost done with preparing the latest info for the game,” and that “Because of a totally unrelated reason, there are circumstances in which that info cannot be released.”
A second source also divulged to Kotaku, that a few months back, Versus XIII’s development and resources were merged into the yet unannounced Final Fantasy XV. It is unclear, however, if this meant actual game code or simply the transfer of staff members to the new project. Another source backed up this information, but apparently both had learned about this merger before the more recent news about the game’s demise.
This is interesting to note, because a few days before this year’s E3 a video was upload to YouTube claiming that Versus XIII had been turned into the next numeric title in the series. Square denied this and said the video was fake, but this new information seems to partially confirm it. When Kotaku asked Square Enix for a comment on the news, they released the following statement.
“We have no information on the status of Final Fantasy Versus XIII, but will be sure to update you as it becomes available.”
Add in the fact the game hasn’t even been mentioned to be a part of the upcoming events celebrating the 25th Anniversary of Final Fantasy, and things are looking grim. For now all we have are rumors and speculation, but until Square Enix comes out and tells us the truth, there’s plenty of reason to assume that this Final Fantasy may never see the light of day.
