Out of all the exclusive reveal trailers shown during the Spike VGA’s last Friday, only one was a brand new IP. That game was The Phantom Pain by Moby Dick Studio, an unknown developer whose goal is “to deliver an uncompromising, exciting and touching game experience to people all around the globe.” The problem is that no one has ever heard of this company. And more importantly, everything shown in The Phantom Pain trailer just screams Metal Gear Solid.

Some fans have already noticed many clues about the game and the studio behind it. For example, the CEO of Moby Dick is called Joakim Mogren; the first name is an anagram of ‘Kojima’ and the last name has the word ‘ogre’ in it. Project Ogre is the name of Kojima’s next big game project besides Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes. Then we have the trailer itself which is just brimming with references to previous Metal Gear games. From the appearance of white flower petals at 0:24, to who appears to be Colonel Volgin from MGS3 at 2:30.

Other gamers also believe that Psycho Mantis can also be spotted near the end of the trailer, and the overall tone and look just seems to confirm that this is Kojima’s work. NeoGAF is already all over it and have compiled various pieces of evidence to prove that this indeed a Metal Gear game. One of the most tantalizing is the picture below, where the lines within the logo for The Phantom Pain seem to reveal the title for Metal Gear Solid V.

The Phantom Pain

Finally, there are the following tweets by journalist Alex Rubens who pretty much confirms that Konami is definitely involved.

The Phantom Pain

Whether the trailer for The Phantom Pain is for Metal Gear Solid V or Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes is anyone’s guess. It appears though, that the game will definitely be released on both PS3 and Xbox 360. While nothing is certain, it does look like Hideo Kojima has pulled a fast one on gamers once again. I personally can’t wait to see how this develops moving forward.
