Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex is probably the way that many fans have been introduced to the cyberpunk world of manga artist Masamune Shirow. His original manga has spawned the aforementioned anime series, three films, and even a couple of video games as well.
Now a new online game is in the works based on the TV series and it’s being developed by Nexon, the studio behind the highly popular MapleStory. Nexon has signed a deal with the publisher of the series, Kodansha, and will have plenty of source material in order to create the online PC game.
Not only does the deal give the company the rights to Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, but also Stand Alone Complex 2nd GIG and the Stand Alone Complex: Solid State Society movie as well. The original manga story, as well as the two films inspired by it are not included in the deal. No other details regarding the game were announced at this time.
I will say, though, that giving the rights to a developer known for cutesy 2D online games is an odd choice. Hopefully Nexon will surprise everyone and create a gritty, mature, cyberpunk MMO game and blow us all away. One can hope anyways.
