IllumiRoom is a new Microsoft technology concept which was revealed at CES 2013. Using a Kinect and a projector, this new patented technique projects 3D video game visuals around the player’s room, creating a more immersive experience. Things like explosions, bullets, and even weather effects like snow come alive around the TV, creating a very interesting effect.

Microsoft says that IllumiRoom can “change the appearance of the room, induce apparent motion, extend the field of view, and enable entirely new game experiences.” All of this done in real time, and functions by using the 3D depth camera in the Kinect to determine the player’s position using infrared. According to the patent behind IllumiRoom this technology might be integrated into the Xbox 720.

Overall it’s an interesting idea and I would definitely like to try it out for myself. I can just imagine how crazy my room would get if I loaded up a classic Xbox 360 title like Geometry Wars… I could probably host my own rave party with that many lights.
