Kunihiko Ikuhara [pictured above next to Miho Arakawa], the famed auteur of Revolutionary Girl Utena & Mawaru Penguindrum finally revealed his newest anime titled Yuri Kuma Arashi in an event he hosted this past Saturday. At the event, footage of a bear transforming into a girl was shown. This event was held concurrently with an art exhibition for Revolutionary Girl Utena in Tokyo. Ikuhara did not reveal how this project will be handled and distributed.
On the other hand, this project will presumably mark the return of Ikuhara back to the director’s chair since 2011′s Mawaru Penguindrum. Perhaps this latest fixation with bears and penguins may be related to Ikuhara’s “Penguinbear” website from last year, though it is mere speculation. Last year around August a website by the name of “Penguinbear” launched promoting a “Kunihiko Ikuhara/Penguinbear” project. The website’s tagline read as “Find out, without getting caught in that clear storm.” The website would eventually serve to promote the Penguindrum manga adaptation.
As an aside, Ikuhara–nicknamed “Ikuni” by fans–was also a part of the creative group BePapas which was formed by several artists from the anime/manga universe. The group was composed of Kunihiko Ikuhara, manga artist Chiho Saito (Lady Masquerade, Waltz in a White Dress), screenwriter Yoji Enokido (The Melody of Oblivion, Ouran High School Host Club), animator Shinya Hasegawa (Neon Genesis Evangelion, The Melody of Oblivion), and producer Yuichiro Oguro (Zoku Sayonara Zetsubou-Sensei, Kemonozume). All of them (except Saito) had previously worked on Sailor Moon S. BePapas was primarily responsible for the highly acclaimed Revolutionary Girl Utena anime and manga.
Yuri Kuma Arashi could very well be related to Penguindrum yet no official word has been given. We will closely follow this story as it develops.
