In a classic case of he said, she said, game designer and Assassin’s Creed creator Patrice Desilets claims to have been fired by Ubisoft, while the company claims he left willingly. Desilets originally left Ubisoft back in 2010 and became the head of THQ Montreal. There he was working on two mysterious titles, Underdog and 1666. After THQ imploded earlier this year, Ubisoft bought up the Montreal studio and was able to bring Desilets back to his former home. However, things ended very suddenly today.
Ubisoft broke the news earlier by releasing a statement, revealing that the renowned designer had left the studio after “good faith discussions” between the two parties had failed.
“The acquisition of THQ Montréal in January allowed Ubisoft to welcome 170 experienced developers, including Patrice Désilets, to our existing and renowned workforce,” said the publisher. “Unfortunately, since the acquisition, the good faith discussions between Patrice and Ubisoft aimed at aligning Patrice’s and the studio’s visions have been inconclusive.
As a result, Patrice has left the studio. Our priorities remain with the teams already hard at work on projects in development. They are at the root of Ubisoft Montréal’s past and future successes.”
The news was surprising to many and caused plenty of speculation. Shortly after, though, Patrice Desilets released his own statement to Polygon claiming quite a different story regarding today’s events.
“Contrary to any statements made earlier today, this morning I was terminated by Ubisoft,” said Desilets. “I was notified of this termination in person, handed a termination notice and was unceremoniously escorted out of the building by two guards without being able to say goodbye to my team or collect my personal belongings.
This was not my decision. Ubisoft’s actions are baseless and without merit. I intend to fight Ubisoft vigorously for my rights, for my team and for my game.”
While we don’t know exactly what took place, it sure sounds like a potential fight is brewing quickly. We’ll keep you updated on the latest developments regarding this story.
