Microsoft has revealed the finalized pricing structure for the upcoming Xbox One exclusive fighting game Killer Instinct. The base game will be free to download on launch day and will come with one playable character (Jago), and full access to all stages, multiplayer, practice, and other modes with no restrictions. Additional characters can be purchased individually for $4.99 / £3.99 / €4.99 apiece, but if you just want to have everything in one package then you have that option as well.
Players can purchase character packs and get the full roster of fighters for a much lower price. The first option is the ‘Combo Breaker Pack’ which saves you 50% and includes Killer Instinct’s first 8 characters (6 of which will be available at launch, and 2 which will come later). This pack will run you $19.99 / £16.99 / €19.99. For those that want a bit more content, there’s also the ‘Ultra Edition’ for $39.99 / £34.99 / €39.99.
This package includes the first 8 characters as well, but also adds in accessory packs, extra costumes, and even an emulated copy of the original Killer Instinct arcade game from 1994. Additional fighters will be released in the future in seasons, so those that want to grow their rosters can keep doing so like in most fighting games these days.
Overall, it’s interesting approach for Microsoft to take with Killer Instinct, and one that I think is pretty fair. Paying just $20 for a next-gen fighting game with a decently sized roster and the ability to upgrade for more content is more than reasonable. It will be interesting to see if other games follow this pattern if it becomes successful.
