Did anything really impress us, or did most of the games leave us feeling flaccid? Afterwards, we grill Nintendo on their decision to bring down its online service for Wii and DS and discuss the possibility of Capcom’s beloved franchises being sold to the highest bidders.

Titanfall dev claims to not have bribed press for positive coverage http://weeabooswithcontrollers.com/2014/02/20/titanfall-dev-claims-to-not-have-bribed-press-for-positive-coverage/ http://weeabooswithcontrollers.com/2014/02/20/titanfall-dev-claims-to-not-have-bribed-press-for-positive-coverage/#comments Fri, 21 Feb 2014 00:29:53 +0000 http://weeabooswithcontrollers.com/?p=28987 Titanfall

In the gaming industry, whenever a game gets too much spotlight, gamers begin to question its tabloid coverage. Remember the fallout between former GameSpot journalist Jeff Gertsmann and GameSpot higher-ups about Kane & Lynch: Dead Men? This in turn lead to a heated debate on whether video game press coverage is nothing more than paid yellow journalism. That has been a touchy subject for several years, and recently it’s been making headlines again with the press coverage of Titanfall, which has been questioned for its credibility.

The issue has been taken to NeoGAF, where several users have been voicing their dissent on the overwhelming positive reception the game has thus far received. One such comment stated that it was quite obvious the positive press had been paid for. “The concept that money didn’t cross hands for this [positive coverage] is just as ridiculous as believing your secret Nigerian uncle is a prince.”

Okay, perhaps the Nigerian prince statement is a bit outlandish, yet it was enough to warrant a reply from Respawn Entertainment’s producer Drew McCoy as user DKo5. McCoy weighed in and called the accusations “insulting.”

Anyone who thinks we weren’t living in the shadow of decade+ old established franchises at our reveal at E3 are as crazy as their conspiracy theories of anyone getting paid off. We’ve had to fight tooth and nail to have a game that anyone would even know existed, let alone be excited for and want to create coverage of. I get it that its not for everyone, but to say we’re paying anyone off is downright insanity. Not to mention the height of insulting.

It’s all too sketchy, because whenever a Call of Duty game is released and the media hails as the next big thing, the number of naysayers is quite small. Ironically enough, Respawn Entertainment used to develop those titles under Infinity Ward. Consequently, now that they decided to work independently on Titanfall, they’re targets of grave accusations.

New Dark Souls II trailer sings a Hollow Lullaby http://weeabooswithcontrollers.com/2014/02/20/new-dark-souls-ii-trailer-sings-a-hollow-lullaby/ http://weeabooswithcontrollers.com/2014/02/20/new-dark-souls-ii-trailer-sings-a-hollow-lullaby/#comments Thu, 20 Feb 2014 22:56:54 +0000 http://weeabooswithcontrollers.com/?p=28983 Click here to view the embedded video.

In the coming weeks before the launch of Dark Souls II, there is a certain rush of anxiety coming from the hundreds of thousands who played the first game. This desperation is attributed to the sudden urge to play the most difficult-dungeon crawler that will hit consoles this year. In fact, it could be argued that Dark Souls II is one of the most anticipated games of the year, and it could turn out to be one of the year’s best.

Developer From Software and publisher Namco Bandai are doing their best to keep everyone’s attention-span glued to their calendars as we begin to count down the days prior to its release date. Dark Souls II will be out in NA on March 11, in Japan on March 13, and in EU on March 14.

With Valentine’s Day upon us, a lot of people are quickly getting into the spirit of the holiday in the most old fashioned and trite way possible. Flowers, chocolates, expensive jewelry and fancy dinners will consume people this Friday, but we gamers know better. Just cozying up next to your partner and playing some co-op on Left 4 Dead will do the trick, and that right there is true romance. And it seems that I’m not alone in this line of thinking, as the latest episode of Best Game Show Ever has hit YouTube and it’s all about the joys of dating gamers and why it’s such a good idea.

Best Game Show Ever is a brand new web series that launched just last week that aims to tackle the gaming culture in a more organic and entertaining way. Each episode features a varied cast of people who love and are deeply connected to the wonderful world of video games. From developers and voice actors, to creators of machinima and everyday gamers like you and I. The show features many interesting perspectives and has so far done a great job at respecting video games and the culture around it while still being very amusing in the process.

The idea for the series comes from Christian Bretz and Jessica Villarreal, who have put their brains together to form a Voltron of sorts. People may know Christian as the creator of the lovable Apocalypse DayZ web series, while Jessica has been lending her hosting talents for years to a number of high profile networks such as Machinima, Spike TV, and G4. According to Bretz, “Best Game Show Ever fills a void that the gaming community wants. We show that gaming isn’t just about the games, and how it impacts all aspects of your life. We’re excited to show gamers in a new light, and invite you to take a look.”

The show releases a new episode every Wednesday and can be found over at the Best Game Show Ever YouTube channel. It’s definitely worth checking out, especially for that dreamy hunk of a man Matthew Mercer, aka the voice of Leon S. Kennedy. As long as they keep bringing him back every week, I’ll be tuning in.

Final Fantasy X|X-2 HD Remaster gets sappy for Valentine’s Day http://weeabooswithcontrollers.com/2014/02/11/final-fantasy-xx-2-hd-remaster-gets-sappy-for-valentines-day/ http://weeabooswithcontrollers.com/2014/02/11/final-fantasy-xx-2-hd-remaster-gets-sappy-for-valentines-day/#comments Tue, 11 Feb 2014 22:37:23 +0000 http://weeabooswithcontrollers.com/?p=28962 Click here to view the embedded video.

Ah, Valentine’s Day. Love is in the air and the Final Fantasy X|X-2 HD Remaster is adding its two cents (in this case, lovers) to the mix. Whoever has played both games should know that Tidus and Yuna were truly an inseparable couple. They fought against and overcame all odds in order to be together… until the end. To fully witness their relationship develop, one had to endure a really awkward whistling scene at some point.

Besides that one and a few other cheese-tastic moments, this is arguably one of the most popular Final Fantasy couples in the history of the franchise. The trailer above is solid proof of it. Thus, if you want to relive all of those memories now remastered in HD, do yourself a favor and pre-order a copy of Final Fantasy X|X-2 HD Remaster. There couldn’t be a better way to celebrate Valentine’s Day this year other than to replay the video above over and over again, when you consider this collection will be released on March 18th, 2014.

If you head to the Square Enix online store, you’ll be able to pre-order a collector’s edition containing plenty of goodies to satisfy Final Fantasy X|X-2 aficionados.

In the wake of Valentine’s Day, an illustrator named Echo Chernik has transformed some of the most well-known couples (and whatnot) within video games into romance novels. Better yet, she’s transposed the cliche onto a book cover to flesh out the obvious romantic implications between each couple. Some of these couples are the same old we’ve come to know and love, yet others were an unexpected and refreshing surprise. Click the jump to see them all.

The Legend of Zelda Super Mario Bros Street Fighter Pac-Man Duck Hunt

The Legend of Zelda, Super Mario Bros, and Pac-Man are totally obvious, but Street Fighter and Duck Hunt? That being said, there are those who will argue in favor of Ken and Ryu from Street Fighter…. Ahem! I’m looking at all those raging fangirls… and some fanboys. The Dog and Duck are just there to provide the captain obvious comic relief, yet where is Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts?
